Ascension

Ascension was one of my first attempts
to fix in form the lyrics and message of a
popular song, which I've done many times
since. This particular song, "Stairway to
Heaven," was written and recorded by Led
Zepellin and released in 1971. Despite its
popularity, it was never released as a
single. But I digress... I had heard the song
hundreds of times, when suddenly, the
entire design for an egg popped into my
head. Every single detail, all at once, and
that's the egg you see here. The stippled
spiral winding around the egg is the
stairway, of course, and the decorative
elements represent what the girl is using as
"she's buying a stairway to Heaven."
