Grapes

I've probably said it way too much
but I've known Satoko for some
years now and it truly has been a
pleasure watching as she took her
first few tentative steps away from
the comfort zone of her
extraordinary decorated eggs. I
always tried to encourage her as
she began to grow more and more
confident of her carving skills, but
my motives were entirely
self-serving. I simply couldn't wait
to see where carving would carry
her... She's very gifted and I
wanted to share some of the magic
that surrounds both Satoko and
her work. Whether she's working
on a big old ostrich shell or a tiny
duck egg, she manages to create
something gracefully elegant.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the biggest
fan of lighting up eggs, but perhaps I should
reconsider. Through the years, I've seen so
many mediocre carvers put their eggs on
lighted bases because even some bad carvings
can be impressive when lit. One of the new
rules for next year's contest is that any artist
submitting lighted eggs must also provide
photos of the same egg without a light and both
versions will be judged as one. Satoko's egg
would still have won as it looks every bit as good
lit up as it does "au natural."
