This is a creative example
of what can be done when
you have an ostrich shell
with a shattered side. Just
make a bowl out of it!

As you can see, I have - for the most part -
allowed the photographs to speak for themselves.
And a fine job they've done. But I must say that
they would serve as perfect examples of how light
and shadow come into play when carvers set
about to create the illusion of depth. Because of
the special lighting used to photograph this egg,
shadows are emphasized and the resulting
illusion of depth is astonishing. From certain
angles, you'd swear that this ostrich shell had to
have been at least two inches thick! Look at the
topmost leaf in the center of the photo to the left.
Its upper edge curls over on itself, which certainly
requires at least some thickness of shell to work
with. However, it's also on top of other vines that
have their own depth and thickness too! And yet,
it is no thicker than the leaf you see at the
extreme lower left corner of the photo directly
above. What an outstanding piece Roger created.
